Ethos & Values
Our School Vision of Relationships, Partnership & Achievement is set out in this document. A paper copy is available fom the school office.
In 2003 Portishead Primary School moved to its current location from behind the High Street and has continued to grow with 480 children currently on roll. Behind this growth lyes a very strong mission statement and 3 core values which guide what we do and how we operate . We have retained a small school ethos despite being a much larger learning community and it is our sense of community and our shared values that give us such a strong sense of identity.
We are a school that recognises that education is a continuous learning journey for our children, our families, our staff and other stakeholders that we work with. We are very proud of our achievements but at the same time try very hard to be a little bit better each day. We recognise that everyone makes mistakes and value feedback as an essential tool to support improvement. At Portishead Primary School we are all "Learning and Achieving Together".
Relationships is our first core value. At our school this means celebrating diversity and valuing uniqueness. Respect for others and a strong sense of personal identity and self worth allows us to make and maintain strong bonds with other people. We acknowledge that school is as much about learning to manage our feelings as it is about the formal curriculum and understand that children will make mistakes or find conforming to rules challenging. We have a Pastoral Team that supports relationships in school and a dedicated Learning Mentor that works with children and families across the school. We celebrate diversity throughout the curriculum and recognise black history month with special assemblies in October. We also take part in Anti-Bullying Week in November each year and support a range of charities and community events. Our Friends of School host a wide range of events for children, parents and families to come in to school and share social time with each other.
Partnership is essential for our children to reach their full potential. A strong link between home and school unable parents and staff to work as a team to nurture each child. In choosing our school we expect parents to support our school policies and help with learning at home. In return we work hard to offer the best possible education we can, keep parents informed with the progress of their child and provide support and information to help parents in the changing educational climate. As a school we are keen to work with other schools and organisations to provide a wider range of services and resources to enrich the curriculum and meet the needs of every child as well as to develop out staff and provide high quality staff development.
Achievement for us means each child reaching their full potential and being rewarded for hard work, determination and perseverance as well as celebrating individual ability. Our staff work hard to provide a challenging and enriching curriculum that excites and engages our learners. We have a celebration assembly every Monday and take every opportunity to recognise great learning and progress whether it be with a kind word, house points, our school reward system or a visit to see the deputy or headteacher. We are proud of the school's academic success in the national end of key stage assessments, however this only looks at reading, writing and maths. In our school achievement applies to the range of curriculum areas and we are also very proud of our art, music and drama outcomes in particular. As we say a sad farewell to each year 6 cohort perhaps what we value most in their achievements is how confident they leave and how well they are able to work together as a team.
Th greatest asset of our school is our fantastic and committed staff. Every staff meeting starts with a thanks and achievements section. So if you think someone deserves a special mention please let the headteacher know and he will share and celebrate that.
It is now a requirement from the DFE to embed the 5 core British values in the life of the school. This is something the school has always done very well. Please see the attached document for more information.
So if there is something we are doing well please shout it from the rooftops, share on social media and tell the community. Where there is some area you think we need to improve or you think we have made a mistake, please respect that we are on an improvement journey just like your children and come and let us know so that we can have the chance to do something about it. We value your views and opinions. We are all "Learning and Achieving Together".
